.oj off S. Aust. : Naracoorte NARACOORTE CAVES Naracoorte Caves were known from the earliest settlement in the South-east of South Australia. It is commonly believed that they were first seen in about 1845 when Benjamin Sanders and William MacIntosh pursued a group of Aboriginals who had stolen some of Sanders' sheep. They soon became popular and were commonly visited by local people. Woods (1862) visited the caves in 1857 and his subsequent writings drew attention to the caves not only as a feature of general interest, but also as a phenomenon of scientific importance. However, the caves were not formally managed until 1885 when a caretaker was appointed. The second and fourth appointees, William Reddan and Robert Leitch were both men of remarkable energy and vision who established the park essentially as it is today. Reddan discovered a number of new caves, particularly the Victoria and Alexandra, and was responsible for the construction of stairs, paths and other aids to visitors. Both he and Leitch gave great attention to planting of trees, shrubs and flowering plants which they saw as improving the appearance of the Park. As a result, many of the postcards depicting the Blanche Cave (= Big Cave or Old Cave) show impressive plantings of both ferns and exotic flowers. In 1969, Rod Wells and Grant Gartrell, members of the Cave Exploration Group of South Australia, discovered in the Victoria Cave an immense deposit of mammalian sub-fossils. These have been the subject of continuing research since that time but have also become a major feature of the visitor experience at the park. The cave has even been re-named the Victoria Fossil Cave. (Lewis, 1977 ; National Parks & Wildlife Service, S. Aust., 1986) Although not a postcard, Naracoorte was until very recently the only cave area commemorated in any way by the Australian Postal Authorities. The "Shower" in Alexandra Cave appeared on scenic lettercards issued in 1915. One of the major puzzles is identification of the photographers involved at Naracoorte. There is no record of who was responsible for many of the series below, e.g., The Tourist Bureau series (1), Sands and McDougall (6) or most of the series numbered from 17 onwards. The Taylor series (3-5) may well have been photographed by James Taylor. However, series 5 also falls within a large number of series where at least some of the same negatives are used, not only in postcards, but also in the souvenir booklets which were published firstly by Bevilaqua and then by Vivian. There is, of course, no evidence that these were all taken by one photographer, but at least some were taken by W.A. Francis (see below). The postcard series concerned are 2, 5, 7, & 8-14, and details are given at the end of this section. S. Aust. : Naracoorte 1. SOUTH AUSTRALIA : STATE TOURIST BUREAU AND INTELLIGENCE OFFICE : NARACOORTE CAVES SERIES [1909] Pu State Tourist Bureau and Intelligence Office F Full-frame picture with words 'Naracoorte Caves' superimposed ; back as illustrated with distinctive propaganda message on each card. As these are more easily distinguished than any other feature of the cards, we use them below to describe the individual cards. The name which follows in brackets is that used for the same view in a Tourist Bureau Guidebook of c.1909. The cards listed without scene names have not been available for comparison. A total of 18 views appear in this booklet and in a somewhat similar one of c.1920, hence there may be as many as 18 cards in this series. 1.1 South Australia produced in 1908 2,061,987 gallons of wine H (The Snow Scene, Alexandra Cave) [pm.13 Nov.1911] 1.2 For the season 1907-8 there were 3,308,385 acres under cultivation in South Australia H (The Broken Pillar, Albert Edward Grotto, Victoria Cave) [pm.10 May 1909] 1.3 The wheat yield of South Australia for 1907-8 was 19,135,557 bushels, valued at L3,747,380 H (Mystery Formation. Alexandra Cave) 1.4 The area of South Australia is 578,361,600 acres H [pm.Jan.1909] (Second Chamber, Big Cave) 1.5 South Australia's imports for 1907 valued L12,120,052 while her exports for the same period valued L13,898,585 H (Reddan Grotto, Victoria Cave) 1.6 South Australia produced in the year 1907 minerals to the value of L814,220. H (View in the Victoria Cave) 1.7 The population of South Australia is 401,000 H (The Mirror, Alexandra Cave) 1.8 For the season 1907-8 South Australia exported 271,629 frozen lambs and 4,490 carcases of mutton. H (The Candles, Victoria Cave) 1.9 South Australian wool exports for 1907 totalled 50,639,368 lbs., valued at L2,100,067 H (View of roof from the Ballroom, Alexandra Cave) [pm.18 Nov.1909] 1.10 During the year ending June 30th., 1907, produce valued at L210,695 passed through the Government Produce Export Department. H From the dates included in these statements, it is clear that the series must have been issued after 1908 ; the earliest postmarked card we have seen is dated 1909, so this is the almost certain date of issue. Thus, the cards were evidently printed prior to both the grand event which marked the opening of Alexandra Cave to the public by the then Governor on 12th May 1909 and the 'un-official' opening on 7th. April 1909. S.Aust. : Naracoorte 2. W.J. CLAYFIELD SERIES [n.l. 1905 - Prob. 1904] Ph All identified views are by W.J. He became interested in the Naracoorte area and moved there at about the turn of the century to open a studio. He is said to have remained in business until 1917, but we have seen a postcard which has a message on the back dated 7 March 1913, and stating ". . . there is no photographer in Naracoorte at present." His first known Naracoorte photographs are from 1898, and include pictures of the Reddan family and of the caves area. JAMES & DONALD TAYLOR James Taylor was a prominent South Australian artist and photographer, who worked in Gawler, Port Augusta and Quorn (Davies & Stanbury 1985 : 238) and who developed the use of the collotype process in Australia. His son Donald then established an Adelaide-based printing company in 1903 which was responsible for a very large number of fine collotype cards. (Cook 1986 : 151-2) Of the series listed here, the first two are recognisable as Taylor cards both by their quality and by the distinctive coat of arms on the back. However, there is no printer imprint, and as Donald Taylor's cards of that date were an atypical shape, it is possible that they were printed by the father, whose imprint actually appears on series 5. 3. SANDS AND McDOUGALL The firm of Sands and McDougall can trace its origins to 1851, when James Williams established a printing, paper- ruling and bookbinding business. The firm changed hands on several occasions and became Sands and McDougall in 1862. Williams moved to Adelaide in 1866, and again was bought out by Sands & McDougall in 1882. The company has continued ever since, with interests in printing, binding, publishing, associated manufacturing and retailing, and having a complex corporate history. They first applied for copyright of a postcard design in 1906, and produced over 370 postcards. (Watts 1984 ; Cook 1986, p. 149) S.Aust. : Naracoorte 6. Gambier 'Borner Watch' for many years. He also operated his own photographic studio, and published a number of booklets and other souvenirs (including postcards). Many of the large framed views of the Blue Lake, commonly seen even today, are his work. He produced postcards of Naracoorte, Mt. Gambier and Tantanoola, few of which bear his name, but can be recognised by comparison with his souvenir books and by extrapolation, from his distinctive backs and printing style. Many of the postcards have a deeply impressed title in deep blue or purple. He worked in the region for some 60 years, dying on 29 August, 1962 (Border Watch, 30 Aug. 1962). 14. Another card shows a family posed in front of their car, with anote on the back, 'Taken Narracoorte Aves Jan 1st. 1920.' S. Aust. : Glenelg River The Glenelg River is largely located in Victoria, but crosses into South Australia for a short distance just East of Mt. Gambier. The lower reaches of the river have cut a broad channel through the limestones of the region, leaving cliffs along each side of the river and a number of caves are found in these cliffs. It is unlikely that any were depicted on cards until after 1945, but we have seen one card which depicts a well-known landing point on the river and shows the cliffs in the background. 1. (unidentified) Pr in Mount Gambier F Coloured lithograph with full-frame picture and superimposed title. 1.1 Donovan's, Glenelg River H 2. (unidentified) F Half-tone print 2.1 Going into the Cave H [depicts a party heading upstream in a small boat - no explicit identification as Glenelg River, but certainly appears to be from that region - probably represents a tourist party en route from Nelson to the Princess Margaret Rose Cave. We also have a personal postcard showing the river and cliffs with an ms. title and date of 1910 (K-A back). S. Aust. : Gosdin's(?) Caves This card shows two young men wearing suits and laying against a rock which in turn overlooks a pool in a stream. No cave is immediately obvious, although there are crannies between boulders. The name 'Gosdin's Caves' is in ms. on the back of the card in the same hand as Robe 2.1 and the two cards were bought from the same vendor. We thus assume that the view is somewhere in South Australia, but this may not be the case. The cards have no other title or imprint and appear to be personal photographs. S. Aust. : Kangaroo Island The major caves on Kangaroo Island are at Kelly Hill, and although these were discovered in 1925 and rapidly became popular, we have not yet seen other than contemporary postcards from there. As around much of the Southern coastline, there are a number of caves and arches along the sea cliffs also, and at least one of these does appear on a card. 1. Gambier is a young volcanic feature, well-known for its Blue Lake, situated in the former crater. Two well-known karst features occur - Umpherston's Cave and Town Cave. Both are in fact only dolines and neither give access to a true cave. The first is a popular picnic spot, and forms a massive amphitheatre, sometimes used for band concerts. The Town Cave is used as a storm-water catchment, but its surroundings are attractively landscaped and planted with ornamental gardens. 1. HUTTON SERIES [n.l. 1907] Pu Robert Hutton, Newsagent, Mt.
